iMessage Not Working: Sending & Receiving SMS on iPhone

After using an eSIM, you may find that your messages in iMessage are not working correctly. Please review the eSIM Quick Start Guide: How to Install an eSIM and eSIM Connection Troubleshooting Guide to make sure your settings are correct.

Still having trouble? No worries, the settings below will restore your iMessage to default settings.

Primary and Secondary Lines

When you install a Travanzi Mobile eSIM, your phone will add a new secondary line for mobile data. The secondary line (eSIM plan) should be used for data only, while your Primary line is set as the Default Voice Line.

Set the Default Voice Line

iMessage Send & Receive Addresses

Since the eSIM plan does not support voice or SMS, we don’t want to enable it for iMessage. Trying to send iMessages directly through the eSIM line will fail.

Note: You can still use the eSIM internet connection to send and receive calls and SMS, but this needs to be supported by your carrier, and additional charges may apply. See: How to Enable Calling and Texting on your eSIM (Wi-Fi Calling).

Connecting to the Internet

After successfully activating your eSIM, your device will begin searching for a signal immediately. In most cases, a data connection will be established immediately, and you will see 5G or 4G LTE in the signal status. This means you are connected and ready to go!

In rare cases, it may take up to 15 minutes for a data connection to be established. Please be patient, as there are many data carriers and environmental factors that can affect the activation time.

eSIM Connection Troubleshooting Guide

There are multiple reasons why your eSIM may appear connected to the network, but is not getting an Internet connection on a 4G LTE or 5G network.

You may experience the following problems when the eSIM is not connected to a data network:

To troubleshoot the above issues, please follow these steps:

IMPORTANT: DO NOT DELETE THE eSIM FROM YOUR PHONE! If it’s not working, don’t worry — please follow the steps below or Contact Us if you need assistance.

Turn on Roaming Data

Roaming Data must be enabled for the eSIM to connect to a network.

In your phone’s Settings, go to Cellular (or Mobile / Mobile Service) and select the eSIM data plan under Cellular Plans. The eSIM plan may be called “Secondary” or “Personal”.

3. Set your phone to use the eSIM for mobile data

4. Android Only - Configure APN

If you are using an eSIM on an Android device and there is no data connection, please check the APN settings by following the steps below:

5. Reset the data connection

On your device Settings screen, enable Airplane Mode and wait 30 seconds, then switch it off again. This will force the device to re-connect to the cellular network.

Wait up to 15 minutes for the eSIM data plan to successfully authenticate and begin receiving 4G LTE or 5G data.

6. Manually select a network

If resetting the data connection does not work, you may need to select a network manually. Follow the steps below:

Note: Please feel free to contact us if you need to manually select a network, so we can recommend the best available options in your area.

Error "Unsupported eSIM"

Unsupported eSIM

Error Message:

"This eSIM is from a carrier that is not currently supported on this iPhone."

This error usually means that your iPhone is carrier-locked and cannot install data plans from other providers.

How to Check if Your Device is Carrier-Locked

Solution

Please contact your mobile carrier to request a device unlock. In most cases, this can be done remotely via customer service (phone or live chat).

How to Enable Calling and Texting on your eSIM (Wi-Fi Calling)

VoIP Calling and Texting with Your eSIM

You can make and receive calls using your regular phone number if your carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling. This allows your phone to connect to your home network over the eSIM’s internet data connection. This means no roaming charges and seamless communication abroad.

WhatsApp & Messaging Apps

Enable Wi-Fi Calling

When Wi-Fi Calling is active, your phone will connect using internet data (eSIM or Wi-Fi), and you’ll see something like “Carrier Wi-Fi” in the status bar. Your phone will then send/receive calls and SMS as usual.

Note: If the Wi-Fi Calling option is missing, your carrier may not support this feature.

Local Phone Number & Charges

Maya Mobile has no access to your regular carrier settings or charges. Always confirm with your carrier to ensure no unexpected roaming fees while abroad.

Activate an eSIM with Manual Activation Codet

If you’re unable to scan the QR code or prefer a different activation method, follow these steps to activate your eSIM manually.
